I know its passe but i need to illuminate my bike for the playa. Does all EL Wire require an AC inverter? Can you get strands that are break-and-glow like glow sticks? where do I find such stuff?

If you're in the bay area, this place has a Berkeley warehouse and weekly or monthly soldering classes. I got my stuff for last year there, and it was perfect for bike illumination.
As far as passe goes, everyone uses EL wire for a reason- it's great! Especially for lighting the frame of a bike so it can be seen from the side. -

Wed, August 10, 2005 - 8:17 AMi just picked some up yesterday and the bike packs come with everything you need - aside from batteries - and all you have to do is zip tie or glue to your bike and you are ready to roll...

Fri, August 12, 2005 - 1:43 PMDo NOT order from Elwirecheap dot com. I ordered on July 18th, with a promise that it would ship out in 3 days and yesterday I had to dispute the charges. I tried to contact them through email and got a canned response twice that said it was on back order and that it would be arriving in 8-9 days. I called them and they never called me back.
If you can buy from someone local to add batteries, that would be my suggestion since its so close. I'm going to try learning the soldering technique later.
